FAQ

Work/Travel Student FAQs

What is the Work/Travel Program?
The Work/Travel program offers international University students the opportunity to work in the United States and gain valuable work experience while earning a modest income. This program is only offered to students during their University summer break. At the end of the program, students may travel up to 30 days to visit other areas in the United States.

What is the J1 Visa?
The J1 Visa allows exchange visitors to legally enter the United States. Your J1 Visa will be placed in your passport with the program number on it. When you enter the United States, you will be required to show your J1 Visa along with a valid DS-2019 form, passport, and will be given the stub of your I-94 card.

What is the DS-2019 form?
This form is a “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status” from the US government. This is the form that allows you to work in the US. This form identifies your program sponsor American Work Adventures, lists the exact dates which you are allowed to work and contains your US employer’s address.

Why do I need a DS-2019 form or a visa?
The J1 visa and a valid DS-2019 form are the legal documents that allow you to enter and work in the US. The dates listed on the form are the legal dates in which you are allowed to work.

What do I need to apply for the J1 Visa?
In order to apply for the program you need to be currently enrolled at the local University. To apply for a J1 Work/Travel visa you need to go to your local US Embassy or Consulate and take the following documents with you:

  • DS-2019 form from American Work Adventures
  • DS-156 – Visa Application
  • DS-157 and DS-158 Forms (from your local US Embassy)
  • Passport
  • Job Offer
  • Valid Student Identification
  • Visa Application Fee (not included in program fees)
  • Confirmation of SEVIS Fee Payment

What is included in the Program fee?
The Program fee, paid to the local agent, includes:

  • Evaluation and Orientation
  • Job Offer
  • J1 Visa Documentation
  • Up to 4 months of Insurance
  • Student Handbook
  • 24-hour Emergency Assistance

The Program fee does NOT include:

  • Visa Application Fees at the US Consulate/Embassy
  • SEVIS Fee
  • Round Trip Airfare to the US and Transportation Expenses
  • Any daily living expenses including rent, utilities, furnishings, meals, etc.
  • Are there any jobs a J1 Work/Travel student can not do?
Students may not be employed as domestic employees in US households (child care, chauffeurs, gardeners, etc.)
  • In positions that require them to invest their own monies to provide themselves with inventory for the purpose of door-to-door sales, or in any employment involving patient care.

What is the work Visa period?
Your working visa is valid for up to a 4-month period.

What are the dates of the Work/Travel Seasons?
The Work/Travel Program operates seasonally during University summer breaks:

  • Summer: May 1 to October 15
  • Winter: November 15 to April 30
  • Spring: March 1 to June 30

What is the Grace Period?
After completing your job assignment, you are allowed to travel for a period of up to 30 days depending on Embassy Restrictions. During this travel time, you are not allowed to work.

Can I extend the program while in the US?
Extending your stay beyond the designated program dates on your DS-2019 form is not possible. You may work for no longer than 4 months and then you have 30 days for traveling.

What is the difference between an AWA Placement and a Self-Placement?
AWA Placements: The AWA team secures positions with employers around the country. AWA employers are thoroughly screened and educated on the guidelines of the Work/Travel program. AWA placements also offer housing options. Should your AWA job be cancelled, AWA will assist by providing other options.

Self Placements: If you elect to arrange your own placement, AWA will require you to send a Job Confirmation Form signed by both you and your employer when you submit your application. AWA must then approve this placement. This option is a great solution for returning students or students who have very specific job preferences.

How much money can I make as a J1 Work/Travel Student?
At the minimum, you will receive federal minimum wage which you will pay income tax on. The exact amount is largely up to you and how hard you want to work. You are allowed to find a second job but a second job is not guaranteed. You should not expect to make enough money to pay back personal debts or school loans. You can expect to make enough to support yourself on the program and possibly to pay back part or most of the program fees. You need to understand that the J1 Work/Travel Program is primarily a cultural experience.

How do I get my W-2 Form to file taxes?

The J-1 SWT participant must contact their previous employer and make sure that their employer sends the W-2 form to the correct address.
